Our history
Human Rights Defence Group was founded in 1994 by Albert W. Mukong in efforts to monitor and address the widespread human rights abuses in Cameroon and the world. Its membership spread in Europe, USA, and some parts of Africa. Mr. Mukong’s vision was the liberation of the minds of Africans, from enslavement, colonialism and dictatorship. This could be achieved only through grass roots education of the inalienable rights of the people. With freedom of the mind achieved he foresaw the Independence of Africa and visioned African Unity.
The 21st century has brought new challenges; terrorism, civil wars, climate change, and epidemics, leading to economic challenges and the rise to migration and refugee crisis worldwide. With the ongoing crisis ,and the challenges it pose, there is the highlighted need for new forms of pressure on governments, groups and their supporters and also close monitoring of laws, policies, and practices that infringe upon basic human rights.
The HIV/AIDS, ebola pandemic has also led to the challenge of a people already in crisis and the need for HRDG to widened its scope of interest by initiating programs that will also be devoted to human rights, development and health.
The Human Rights Defence Group (HRDG) will thereby defend human dignity and equality worldwide. We will broadened and strengthened our work on the rights of women, children, refugees, and migrant workers, bringing a human rights perspective to such issues as domestic violence, trafficking, rape as a war crime, and child soldiers.
The organization will find new ways to investigate rights, Spotlighting previously ignored wtopics such as the international arms trade and the role of business in human rights, producing ground-breaking studies, for instance, on rights abuses by financial institutions in oil, gold, and other natural resources in Africa.
Human Rights Defence Group will look at ways to resettled refugees, integrate migrants and protect the vulnerable.
To accomplish this, the Human Rights Defence Group will apply its traditional on-the-ground fact-finding and grass -roots education with new technologies and innovative advocacy that will cut edged promoting respect for human rights worldwide.
